We are seeing history in the making, big history. I see parallels to chapters of Witness for my Father over and over…Lockdown life changes, racial oppression, civil unrest, people demonstrating resilience, children and young adults growing through new life experiences. But what does all this mean? We are fortunate to live in a great country, one of the best in the world. I believe this. Democracy is our foundation, and the constitution is our guide. Yes, some laws need amending, and local and global fluctuations force change. But let’s remember who we are. We are a people who have great abundance and freedom. But those freedoms also mean that we must stay vigilant. When any of us are oppressed or discriminated against, we have an obligation to listen, to help, to facilitate change, to make it right. Our freedoms depend on it!
Last Week I presented to history classes at a Connecticut high school via Zoom. While I do miss seeing the students in person and the interaction I have with them, I’m grateful we can keep the momentum going. My mission to share WWII history through the eyes of one family, one man, really seems to resonate with them. This generation can lead us in a new direction based on their experiences, which is why empowering these students is my goal. They will be our decision makers! I encourage them to reflect and ask; Living through these unprecedented times, how do they feel? What do they want their world to look like?
Last Thursday, I was also honored to be interviewed by the director at The HERO Center/CT Voices of Hope. One of the questions she asked was about the headline on the cover.
how a jewish survivor and a black lieutenant
prevailed against genocide and racism
Every time I answer that question, I’m moved to share the time lieutenant Withers and his black troop cared for MY Dad after his liberation. They understood discrimination. I consider their time together an example of the best part of humanity. Streaming live on Facebook, there were a few technical difficulties and interruptions, but the most important part came through – the true story of a witness to the best and worst of humanity. Last evening I received a note that read: Congratulations! Witness For My Father, published Biography, is a semifinalist for the 2020 Royal Palm Literary Awards competition!
I just had to share this good news with you. Your support makes all the difference!
Thank you!
