Book Clubs are Alive and Well!

by | May 27, 2020

I have to admit that I hesitated when I was invited to attend my first book club meeting on Zoom. After launching Witness For My Father, our lives changed so quickly, and like other major life events, you have to adapt, and have hope! For heaven’s sake, that’s the theme of my book.

I’m so glad that I said yes!

My first book club was with a group in Vernon Connecticut, and it was an eye-opener. We talked about the story and their reactions to it. Some readers even made changes in their own lives. What an honor!

One member of the book club called to see her father, as it had been too long. And many wanted to know more about my mother’s perspective;I’m keeping that in mind.

Some quotes I’d like to share:

“I didn’t want to read the book because of the Holocaust theme, but this story…hope came through, made you want to see what happens.”

“Resilience, how to get past your losses, not to be bitter, and with kindness.”

“Never give up on hope!”

My second Zoom book club meeting was in Clearwater Florida. Three members honed-in on teaching the lessons my father learned.. “Teach at schools”, “Visit museums.” One of the members suggested I prepare a discussion guide for book clubs, while another pointed out the interfaith connections, and the love that originates from faith and traditions.

“Humanizing-so many facets, Jews, Christians, Blacks..” said another.

Remember my initial hesitation? Well, now I’m a fan of these virtual book club meetings. I’ll be attending another in St. Petersburg this week, and one may follow in California. There’s so much more opportunity to interact with my wonderful readers no matter where they live.

I’m excited to meet more amazing readers, as I always learn a ton from them.

Don’t forget you can have a mimosa or glass of wine in hand…no one’s driving!

Thank you to book club members everywhere for this wonderful opportunity!

To hope,
Barbara
